A shotgun mic has a very directional audio pickup pattern. The better ones have mics on the side of the mic to "hear" the sound coming from the sides to reject it and only allow the audio from the from mic. Check Sennheiser and Audio Technica for good ones... They are expensive. RODE, Audio Techinica and Sennheiser also make affordable ones. Shotgun mics are commonly used as camera-mounted or on a boom.
A Lav - Lavaliere - is a clip on mic. It can be wired or wireless. The mic element is connected to a thin wire to a body pack. The body pack is what can be wired or wireless. Sennheiser, EV (ElectroVoice) Audio Technica and Shure make good Lav systems. The wireless body pack transmits the signal to a base station. The base station is plugged in to a camcorder or mixer...
