Shure SM58 - the world's toughest microphone?
How to mic an amp and record to computer?
I was wondering how to record my guitar amp to my computer, using a mic (eg shure sm57). Do i need a mixer? What software should i get? How do i actually connect the mic to my computer?
Thanks
The best way to record using a computer is to have an audio/midi USB computer interface like the new 3rd generation Mboxes made by Avid. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Avid-Pro-Tools-Mbox-Mini--3rd-gen--106091184-i1552697.gc - The Mbox comes with Pro Tools, the industry standard recording software and it is capable of producing broadcast quality sound recordings. Then you just connect your microphone to the Mbox. However, if your amplifier has an AUX output for recording, you are better off recording directly from your amp and not using a microphone. If you have a guitar effects processor like the BOSS GT-10, I would not even suggest using your amplifier because recording directly fromt he GT-10 through the Mbox will sound 10 times better.
The whole music industry is changing. It used to be that you bought a guitar and a guitar amplifier and the only effects anyone used were reverb, delay, and tremolo. Today, there are a whole host of effects processors that sound better than any guitar amplifer. So, you are much better off today buying a guitar effects processor and power amplifier and a good pair of high quality speaker cabinets and you will have more power and a better sound than you can possibly imagine for a lot less than buying the most expensive guitar amplifier.
For instance, you could purchase the most expensive Marshall amplifier for around $4,000 http://www.guitarcenter.com/Marshall-Plexi-1959SLP--1960AX-and-1960BX-Tube-Guitar-Full-Stack-773030-i1323287.gc - that is a 100 watt amplifier with a total of 8 12" speakers and by itself, it's a very dry amplifier. That is, there are no effects except Gain (distortion) and EQ. No Reverb, no tremolo, no delay, and nothing else in the way of effects except a connection so you can add your own effects loop. Or you could purchase a BOSS GT-10 ($500) or the new Roland GR-55 guitar/bass synthesizer ($800) or both and have all of the best sounding guitar effects that money can buy. Then to amplify your chosen effects processor, you could purchase a 500 watt stereo power amplifier like the QSC GX5 ($400) and buy a pair of JBL JRX115 2-way speaker cabinets ($280 each) and a pair of JBL JRX112 stage monitors ($270 each) to go with your live sound set-up. You will not find a better sounding speaker than JBLs for live sound. You will get crisper highs and fuller lows. So, you add all that together and you a have more sounds, more volume capacity, and better sound qualtiy for lot less money. Plus, you can record live from this set-up or our use the very same gear in your home studio and you can produce your own broadcast quality sounds and sell them on iTunes or Amazon. Add a mixer to this configuration, and you can power the whole band and balance the sound perfectly.
