How To Mic A Theatrical Performance With Audix Microphones
I am currently helping with school drama performances and having difficulty with microphones.?
The school currently use three undirectional lavalier microphones positioned along the front of the stage for sound. These are hardwired to a Pevey XR 800 D 8-channel sound board however the sound input is often very weak with a level of background static and boosting the signal/ gain has little benefit. We do also have two headset radio mics however these are bulky and not very mobile for use. Any help/ suggestions are greatfully appreciated.
Where are the speakers located? In relation to the three microphones, if they are too far downstage, that can definitely lead to static and other undesired sounds.
Additionally, is there any particular reason you are using lavalier microphones in this way? They are meant to be used by individual performers.
Finally, even if that is the case, most lavalier microphones I have seen can be fitted with moleskin or a hollow centered sponge (I'm not sure what the actual term for those is right at the top of my head, but they're the spongey things generally used to decrease undesired background noise on microphones.)
The best thing you can do is to experiment with moving your speakers and microphones around to see what works the best, then tweak the signal / gain, possibly even experiment with the levels of sound.
