Wireless Router/Wii Internet Connection Question?
Hi, I recently purchased a Netgear RangeMax Next Wireless Router (WNR834M) and have a few questions:
1. Currently, my desktop pc has a static ip. Do I need to have a dynamic ip to make my router function or does it not matter? If so, how do I change it?
2. I am planning on connecting another computer (unfortunately, this one is pretty old) and have another Ethernet cable. How do I do this?
3. Will this router allow me to get internet on my Wii?
4. What is the difference between an access point and a router? Does this wireless router have an access point built in?
5. What does it mean when it says "up to 300 Mbps wireless networking"? Will that change the speed of my internet?
I appreciate all the help and tips that I can get!
Paultech or Ted B, if I decide to use a static IP, how do I turn off the DHCP?
1. Check with your provider about the IP. Most cable internet use dynamic ip, static ip is usuall a dsl connection. You don't need dynamic ip since you can assign ips from your router. Just make sure that none the devices connect to the router have the same ip address. If you have dynamic, you need to enable the DHCP server setting in your router. For static ip, you need to disable the DHCP server so you can manually assign ip address.
2. Connect one end of the ethernet cable to the NIC of the old PC and the other end to a Lan port on your router.
3. Yes it will work with the Wii if you're using wireless. For wired connection you need to get a usb lan adpater for the Wii.
4. Wireless access points (APs or WAPs) are specially configured nodes on wireless local area networks (WLANs). Access points act as a central transmitter and receiver of WLAN radio signals. Access points used in home or small business networks are generally small, dedicated hardware devices featuring a built-in network adapter, antenna, and radio transmitter. Access points support Wi-Fi wireless communication standards. Your router will also serve as an access point among other things.
5. In order to get 300 Mbps you'll need a NIC that designed to go with your wireless router, usually it's a Pre-N or Draft N standard. This so called 300 Mbps (theoretically) is only between the router and Nic. It only make files transfer between all your network pcs faster, if they have the same NIC. It won't increase your internet speed. Your internet speed is capped by your ISP. It's probably around 2 Mbps to maybe around 15 Mbps depends on how much you pay or the kind of connection you have.
EDIT: To turn off DHCP, you need to go into the router setup and find the DHCP section and either choose Disable or Remove the checkmark in the box next to it.
